FRIDAY FOURTEEN ISSUE 135

August 5, 2022
This week: An extremely satisfying house tour video of Sienna Miller’s 16th-century thatched-roof cottage, why the US killing Al-Qaeda’s leader doesn’t matter all that much, an unusually honest celebrity profile, a website to bookmark for nights when you can’t decide what to watch, reactions to the government’s plan to enshrine an Indigenous voice in parliament, and more.

This week, Australian PM Anthony Albanese unveiled the wording of a draft referendum question as part of moves to enshrine an Indigenous voice in parliament (here’s a quick refresher on what the referendum *actually* means). MP for Indigenous Affairs and Wiradjuri woman Linda Burney made a moving speech in support of the voice, while MP and Warlpiri woman Jacinta Nampijinpa Price argued there are “more pressing issues” than a referendum. Highly recommend watching Monday night’s episode of Q&A to see these two women (and other First Nations panellists) respectfully share their thoughts about the referendum live on Arnhem Land

There's nothing "pro" life about any of this

A compelling piece on why antifeminism backlash is reason in itself to be bolder in our fight for equality [“If your enemy is going to lash out anyway, you might as well demand the world you really want.”]

Novelist (and Slice favourite) Brandon Taylor has published a new short story in Guernica magazine and any story that starts like this you know is going to be good – “Hamish regretted agreeing to the dinner almost immediately, but he arrived at the bistro in Tribeca just before eight and tried to feel good about it.”

This interview with White Lotus and Euphoria actor Sydney Sweeney is fascinating because it talks about class and the economics of being a young actor in a way that other celebrity profiles just…don’t

Freelancing on top of your full time gig? Juggling bosses isn’t so different to accommodating multiple lovers

Of course Sienna Miller lives in a 16th-century thatched-roof cottage in Buckinghamshire (there’s also a video house tour if you really want to make yourself green with envy)

Endlessly scrolling Netflix? Tell this extremely clever website what genre you feel like watching and what streaming sites you have access to and it will spit out stuff to watch

In a move that can only be described as on brand, Donald Trump has likely buried his ex wife Ivana near the first hole of his Los Angeles golf course for a tax break. Here are photos of the very austere grave (and dare we share the murmurs that her death was suspicious…?)

You have to give an in-depth presentation about a TV show. You’ve been given no time to rewatch any episodes or research. What show is your presentation about?

In tech news: Pinterest has launched a new moodboard app called Shuffles, Twitter is set to be the latest social media platform to introduce pinned posts, it looks like TikTok is preparing to launch a streaming service to rival Spotify (and they’re also apparently paying users to invite their friends to the app)

Why the US killing Al-Qaeda’s leader doesn’t matter all that muchArthur Brooks’ column for the Atlantic about staying happy during a recession is exactly what we needed to read this week

And also….Beyoncé used the same ableist slur Lizzo was recently criticised for using and is now also removing the word from her song, a gleeful exploration of plurals in Italian, Slack shortcuts you should know about, what President Obama is reading and listening to, intrusive grown up thoughts, the most relatable video ever, a restaurant for cats is opening in New York, this spread looks like heaven, a grief comic, this hinge voice note is unhinged, on trying to do the splits, a blueprint for the perfect icecream sando, is this how everyone’s been making Caesar salads?, if celebrities were therapists, the French employee vs the British boss, Indigenous Greens senator Lidia Thorpe called the Queen a coloniser while being sworn in to parliament this week, when Gen Z can’t come into work, the girl who just got back from Greece, how to grow endless basil and tiny love stories

What we've been watching, cooking, listening to and reading this week...

Lizzie, managing director

Cooking: I’m going to give hashbrown avo toast a whirl this weekend
Listening: Really enjoyed this Conversations episode – Richard Fidler interviews Maggie Beer about her life and food

---

Michaela, content & digital marketing specialist

Eating: In an attempt to ease myself back into baking, I made this pumpkin cake with maple cream cheese frosting and thoroughly enjoyed the fruits of my labour earlier this week
Watching: Part two of an appropriately unhinged recap of Glee (for the uninitiated you can find part one here). If you’re looking for a rainy day binge-watch this weekend make it these three hours and 44 minutes of glorious longform YouTube content.

Ava, copywriter & content producer

Cooking: Red Boat Anchovy Salt is my condiment of the week. Add it to soups and sauces when you need a hit of intensely savoury umami flavour. It’s made with traditional Vietnamese fish sauce fermentation methods for a concentrated flavour (and it’s not super salty)
Drinking: My latest non-alcoholic obsession is Dash Water’s bubbly springwater, infused with imperfect peaches. It’s free of sugar and sweeteners, and also reduces food waste 🙌
