FRIDAY FOURTEEN ISSUE 43

July 3, 2020
This week: What it’s like to rebuild your life after seven years in prison gap, 10 ways to pimp up your toast, a podcast about a high school class election that also manages to be about everything that’s wrong with America, a lesson in correct ramen noodle construction, and more.

This story of a woman’s first year out of prison as she rebuilds her life from scratch is equal parts heartbreaking, anger-inducing and fascinating (“When doing everyday things like grocery shopping, Makeda says, she feels slow and awkward, trying to remember what juice brand she used to drink and learning what new products came out while she was away. Her pants barely fit. The subway freaks her out: Seeing so many men is unnerving after years of living with only women.”)

A long list of comfort movies (scroll down to the comments)

One woman writes with extreme honesty about the gap between who she was pre-kids and the person she’s become since having a baby (“This weekend the elastic band between my imaginary self and my actual self stretched so far it finally snapped. I was passive aggressively making and freezing cubes of baby food for my son (a task that probably invites passive aggression), huffing and puffing louder and louder, banging pots and theatrically checking the time on my phone every few minutes to demonstrate that I was very busy, in a rush and not happy about it.”)

10 ways to pimp up your toast (though Vanessa would like to point out that leftover mashed potatoes on toast is a noticeable omission from this otherwise excellent list)

50 people share the best therapy advice they’ve ever been given (Like this one: "Always come back to you. Others' actions are not personal, they are simply looking through the lens of their own past.")

How do you know when you’re ready for kids?

We recently started following @supersimplescientist on Instagram, and loving the straightforward way she explains complicated topics

Oof, the plot twist on this TikTok is gooooood

We’ve raved about the podcast Reply All before, and this week’s episode Candidate One had us hooked from the very first minute. It centres around a high school class election (stay with us) but also manages to explore basically everything that’s wrong with the US, including election fraud, hacking, bribery, campaign finance reform, you name it. Trust us on this one

Turns out we’ve been making instant noodles wrong all along (apparently we’re meant to rinse the noodles in cold water to get rid of the oily coating??)

“A fat chick walks into a doctor’s office” (aka why the US medical system is fucked)

If you hate recipes but love cooking, may we suggest you give @everynightoftheweek a follow? It’s run by Lucy Tweed, a Sydney food stylist and mum of five, and she posts excellent dinner ideas that embrace the chaos of weeknight cooking

This new dystopian novel in which women are given a ticket on the first day of their period (a white ticket grants you children; a blue ticket gives you freedom) is going on our reading list asap

A friendly PSA that if musicals are your thing, Hamilton is hitting Disney’s streaming service toniiiiiight. There’s sadly no free trial but unless you’ve managed to score tix to the Sydney opening in 2021, this may be your only chance to catch the award-winning show
