FRIDAY FOURTEEN ISSUE 126

June 3, 2022
This week: Milingimbi woman Sylvia Nulpinditj becomes the first woman to commentate an entire AFL game in a First Nations language, turns out men only listen to men on women author recommendations, how it feels to lose a name, some sage advice for those of us thinking about a side hustle, and more

Milingimbi woman Sylvia Nulpinditj made history this week when she commentated an entire AFL game in Yolngu Matha

#SwedenGate started trending on Twitter this week because someone on Reddit shared a childhood memory of not being served dinner at their friend's house, and that turned into users clashing over the Swedish tradition of not serving food to guests in certain situations, and THAT turned into an all-out attack on Sweden for their racist past, and it's probably fair to assume that Sweden is looking for a new PR team right about now

As far as celebrity homes go, Vanessa Calton’s moody 19th century property is one of the more attainable ones. All those dark walls 😍

In tech news: Rumours are swirling that Apple will announce a search engine to rival Google next week, Meta is trialling avatar reactions to Instagram stories, TikTok is testing a distraction-less “clear mode" (good god no), and we’ve recapped everything you need to know about the upcoming IG feed changes

Crowd-sourced ideas for easy meals to make after a long day (scroll down to the comments)

Even if you think you’re a good listener, you’re probably not

British journalist Pandora Sykes’ new podcast ‘Unreal’ has dropped and we’re obsessed. Each hour ep explores how reality TV has shaped our lives and unpacks the ethical questions raised by the format. The first episode winds back 22 years (!!) to when Big Brother became a global phenomenon and it’s wild to think about how much the show changed the course of TV

We can’t decide if we’re impressed or appalled by the Facebook groups where elite private school students sell private islands and second-hand helicopters in public displays of wealth. Weird flex but ok?

You wouldn’t be alone if you’ve debated turning your hobby into a side hustle recently, but does that defeat the purpose of having a hobby?

A beautifully raw account of how it feels to lose a name, and how to reclaim it (“Nicknames take over—Sukriti becomes Suki; Pema becomes Emma in coffee shop lines and at bookstore counters; Anika becomes Nikki. It requires less repeating to well-meaning shop attendants, less constant spelling out loud. It’s easier. I often think of my father, moving to Australia in his late teens and changing his name to James, just to make it easier for everyone else. A rebirth.")

#SeedCycling: a miracle hormone hack or a slippery-slope to false hope?

Old habits die hard. Here’s a timely reminder that taking sick leave is actually fine as the pandemic takes a backseat in the global zeitgeist

Over in the Guardian, male authors of the likes of Ian McEwan, Salman Rushdie and Richard Curtis are sharing their favourite books written by women because apparently men only listen to other men when it comes to women authors 🙄

Andddd….. someone smeared cake on the Mona Lisa to protest climate change (yes, we were also confused by this), we’re living in the future but not the one we would like, there are two types of parents, this cowboy caviar just keeps getting better, it’s finally soup season, speculation is rife as to what Kourtney Kardashian and Gwyneth Paltrow’s brand collab will be called, bid tech-neck adieu with these six stretches you can do at work, when you’re on a date with the posh ick, this Kookai POV is bringing back all the 2000s feels, whoever runs the Australian Electoral Commission’s twitter account made some hilarious admissions,  what it’s like to fly as a wheelchair user, what it’s like to work at Lush HQ from an ex-staffer part one and part two, a long list of summer road trip music recs, funny emergency vet bill stories, cannot believe this man is Australia’s new opposition minister, and small kindnesses

What we've been watching, cooking, listening to and reading this week...

Vanessa, content & strategy director -->

Listening:What I Want by Flight Facilities feat. BROODS. So addictive
Cooking: Cauliflower wasabi soup. Make cauli soup as per usual (I do a whole cauli, a leek, a few carrots and potatoes, lots of veggie stock and a generous helping of miso), and then after everything is all soft, blend with a stick until it’s super smooth, and add wasabi to taste. So, so good
Reading: Esquire has revisited the phenomenon of Gone Girl ten years after the novel was first published and I know what I’m re-reading this weekend

---

Lizzie, managing director -->

Watching: The trailer for the semi-autobiographical film about Sliverchair’s Daniel Johns, What If The Future Never Happened? 🤯
Cooking:
Spiced chickpeas and whipped feta on toast is my new fancy lunch option

---
Hamish, content coordinator -->

Eating: So much bang bang chicken from my fav Aussie TikTok foodie
Listening: Alfie Templeman’s new album Mellow Moon
