FRIDAY FOURTEEN ISSUE 100

November 12, 2021
This week: Does having kids actually make you happier, a long thread of recommendation threads (so meta), wise words on decision-making fatigue, an extremely detailed firsthand account of what happened at Astroworld and why social media doesn’t always help us make sense of horrific events, women around the world open up about their relationships, and more.

An eight year old explains the metaverse

Does having kids actually make you happier? (“A deep puzzle remains: Many people would have had happier lives and marriages had they chosen not to have kids – yet they still describe parenthood as the “best thing they’ve ever done”. Why don’t we regret having children more?”)

Youtube is now making dislikes private... is good vibes only a good thing? 👍👎

A video of Scott Morrison’s slip of tongue at COP26 has gone viral on Chinese social media website Weibo

Okay, so Succession but it's a romantic comedy between Tom and Greg

We shared this wonderful piece by the writer Patrick Lenton about his long-distance pandemic relationship a few months back, and now the Guardian have published a sort-of-sequel that centres on Patrick and his partner moving in together, and the funny ways in which living with someone else forces you to reexamine yourself

Someone wrote into The Cut with some brutally honest feelings about feeling numb, and we loved the thoughtful response on how to go about thawing yourself

An extremely detailed and disturbing firsthand account of what happened at Astroworld (trigger warning for this one) — and why social media doesn’t always help us make sense of horrific events

How to become your own influencer (aka trusting your own damn self)

Women around the world open up about their relationship status (scroll down to the comments)

A long thread of recommendation threads (so meta) for everything under the sun, including the best nonfiction audiobooks, sunny but soothing music, good ways to eat leeks without putting them in soup, interesting podcasts that aren’t about killing people, and many many more

Wise words on decision-making fatigue (“Whatever you decide, just keep on going”)

Dream kitchen alert

Other stuff we enjoyed wasting time on this week… watching owls run, dreaming about having tea shelves, thinking about all those tree seeds that Instagram promised they’d plant that now have nowhere to go, reading this VERY heated debate about being anti big-light (Vanessa: I am extremely anti big light and now I have a name for it), 100% making this carbonara ramen, at the hairdressers, people who go to the gym, Dolly Parton responding to criticism about her appearance, and shipping these two Dutch politicians that we don’t even know
