FRIDAY FOURTEEN ISSUE 127

June 10, 2022
This week: the hilariously transparent queer pandering of corporate America for profit, a long overdue explanation of why women feel the cold more than men, the difference between being single in your thirties and being “still single” in your thirties, the New York Times discovers flatmates, and more

11 cult queer books to read this Pride, courtesy of Dazed

…and queer-pandering corporate America gets trolled by their own inauthentic campaigns (dying over this one)

An extraordinarily vulnerable conversation between the novelists Patricia Lockwood and Sally Rooney

Finally, scientific proof (in language we can understand) that explains why women feel the cold more than men

A beautiful essay on motherhood and home (“I greet the handy-man in my dirty pink robe with a nude baby in one hand and some muddy radishes in the other. I’m not usually like this, I say. Don’t worry, I’ve seen it all, he says.”)

No worries if not

Have you ever struggled to put into words the tenuous up-and-down relationship you have with your boss? You could be experiencing workplace love bombing

Actually helpful advice for surviving heartbreak (including how to get them back, because, let’s face it, you’re going to try and do it)

In tech news: Apple’s new iOS update lets you edit and un-send messages, Sheryl Sandberg is leaving Facebook after 15 years as COO, TikTok’s new Bitmoji-like Avatars feature lets you record videos as an animated version of yourself, the rise of TikTok is hurting social media stocks, Apple has launched a buy-now pay-later service, Instagram is rolling out new creator tools to encourage people to make Reels (and not TikToks), Mecca and MAC have collaborated to create Australia’s first shoppable Snapchat lens, and the EU is forcing Apple to change its charging port by 2024

A 33-year-old woman who’s never had a relationship writes extremely honestly in Elle about the difference between being single in your thirties and being “still single” in your thirties

If you don’t have TikTok and you’d kind of like to know what’s happening on TikTok but there’s no way you’re downloading TikTok, we reckon you might enjoy following this Instagram account

The New York Times published an article this week about strangers living together in New York and it seems they may have finally discovered… flatmates??

Apparently mixing salad dressing and spicy water is the recipe for a ‘healthy coke’? This guy tried it so you don’t have to and this woman said what we’re ALL thinking

And in other news…. Grace Tame has written a book and the cover art is beautiful, the ultimate love story, the second season of And Just Like That will start three weeks after the first season ended and there’s going to be more Che than ever before 😩, a great thread of someone watching When Harry Met Sally for the first time, Miriam Margoyles saying what everyone in the UK is thinking rn, a long list of houseplants that don’t need any sunlight, a even longer list of cheap weeknight meal ideas, a beautiful poem about divorce, the actor Kristin Stewart has put out a casting call for her new queer ghost-hunting reality show and we’re 100% going to be watching that, people are apparently snorting caviar now, an extremely accurate impression of the co-worker who got in early and has to let everyone know, reminiscing about the only good thing that happened in 2020, keen for some Great Depression-era baking, you can now swipe right on hospo jobs in your area, and Margaret Atwood has had to release a fireproof copy of The Handmaid’s Tale because, well, you know

What we've been watching, cooking, listening to and reading this week...

Vanessa, content & strategy director -->

Watching: Phoenix dropped their new single Alpha Zulu this week and the video clip is MESMERISING
Listening:This week’s episode of the podcast How to Fail with Elizabeth Day. Her guest is Michael Rosen, the children’s book author (he wrote Going on a Bear Hunt ❤) who spent 47 days in hospital with Covid in 2020 and became an outspoken critic of the government’s pandemic response. This is a wonderful, vulnerable listen. (Michael Rosen is also an excellent person to follow on Twitter.)
Baking: This Greek yoghurt cake with jam. One bowl! No mixer required! The perfect public holiday cake
